How to Increase Credit Score

Most people wonder how to increase credit score ratings when they find themselves denied credit due to a low credit score. Credit score repair is not something most people are acquainted with, and if you want to fix your credit score then you are probable best to have it done professionally.

However, although professional credit experts know how to increase credit score figures, they can be expensive, and if the price that most of these companies charge is beyond your budget then there are some steps you can take yourself to help to increase your credit score and go part of the way to taking the credit score repair steps needed for you to be regarded as a reasonable, if not good, risk by lenders.

Unfortunately, most of the online advice given is not of any use to most people who have had, or still do have, bad debts. That is, debts that have not been paid on time, or that have defaulted and been passed on by the original lender for collection by a debt agency.

If that describes you, there is little point in you being advised to handle your debts responsibly, and to use credit cards responsibly, since you will likely be up to your ears in debt, or might have just paid off your old debts and are now looking for new credit. YOu will need to know how to increase credit score figures before you will be succesful. Many people need credit cards for a number of reasons: for work if traveling is a part of your job, and also for booking hotels and the like.

Many do not accept cash any longer, or when they do you are regarded as being untrustworthy and have to pay a substantial deposit. If you have a bad credit record, you will likely have to learn how to increase credit score figures if you are to be accepted for another credit card.

Our advice is based upon real situations, because I have been in your position. I have been weighed down by over a $100,000 in credit card debts that I paid for three years only to find the debt gradually increasing. Most of my credit cards went into collection and I had voluntary repayments agreements with at least 7 of them.

I had no idea how to increase credit score ratings, but what I did do was to keep one card fully maintained and did my best not to miss a payment. That stood me in good stead later when I had no hope of getting another one.

That is my first piece of advice:

  1. If there is still time, make one credit card your priority and keep the repayments up to date. I know it sounds irresponsible, but you are better letting the rest go to collection and maintain one, since otherwise you will have no credit cards at all. This only applies if a credit card is essential for your work, or there is some other reason why you must have one. Those that disagree with me have not been in my position- or yours!
  2. Get a copy of your credit report. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are the three top ones, Experian being the biggest and most used in Europe. You will have to pay a small sum for your credit record, but once you have it you will know what lenders are seeing. You might get a free report online, but will have to pay for your credit score. Incidentally, they can also help advise on how to increase credit scores.

Check out the websites of each of these credit reference agencies, and you will find out how to get your report. You should pay no more than $10 for each, and might even get it free.

  3. Check out the report: it is estimated that every report has at least one error that you can have corrected. Check out How to Read Your Credit Report for more details on how to spot errors. If you spot errors, then write to the reference agency and ask for them to be changed. They will likely ask for proof, so be sure that you are able to prove the error. However, that is one of the best ways of how to increase credit score figures: spot the errors and get them corrected.
  4. If you are still paying debts contact each of your debtors and explain that you are unable to pay at the current rate. Work out a rate that you can afford, based on all of your debts, and offer that to each of your creditors. This will not help your credit rating, but might stop it getting so bad that it will take years to repair.
  5. Pay your debts that are in collection (passed to debt collectors or solicitors) before those not yet in collection. Failure to do this could result in more severe action, and you could be taken to court. This certainly will affect your credit score in a very negative way.
  6. Try to avoid court cases at all costs, but if you are taken to court offer a reasonable repayment that you can afford. The court will not force you to meet an unreasonable monthly payment based on your income and commitments, even though the debtor is asking for more. However, any repayment schedule directed by a court must be maintained. If you default on that then you could lose either your home or, if you are not a homeowner, its contents. I am not trying to scare you here, simply making you realize what you must do. You are best to face the facts now than when it is too late. Get a repayment schedule organized and them think on how to increase credit scores.

  7. Once you have started to repay your debts at an affordable rate, you can then take steps to make sure that you pay them as quickly as possible:
    • Cut out any eating out, even on special occasions until your debts have been paid.
    • Forget vacations, and be as frugal as possible in your unnecessary expenses. Walk that 200 yards to the local store rather than drive or take a bus. Use your feet – they are free.
    • Stop travel and expensive entertainment. That will still be there when you are debt-free, but until then you can use libraries or grow your own vegetables in your garden or backyard.
    • If you want increase your credit score you will have to stop using cell phones, stop using plastic and find out what interest you are paying to each debtor. Pay off the highest interest debt first: if you can’t do that, then make a higher monthly payment to the highest interest debt, and the lowest payment to the lowest rated.
  8. Keep all of this up until your debts have been paid. You cannot realistically fix your credit score while still owing debts, and no company can help you how to increase credit score ratings until you are debt free. Once you are debt free there are things that you can do to fix your credit score. Credit score repair is possible when you are debt free, and there are certain ways to go about it that we will now look it.

First, try to get a loan, whether it is a bad credit refinance on your existing mortgage, or an adverse credit mortgage to raise you some money to get a new car or have a holiday to celebrate being loan free again. The best way how to increase credit score figures is to get credit and maintain it properly, never missing a single payment.

However, keep in mind how you got into this position, and make sure that any adverse credit loan you get is paid at the right time, because you won’t get two chances here. The only reason I am suggesting that you get a bad credit loan of some sort is that this is how to increase credit score ratings: successfully maintain monthly payments on a loan or mortgage.

You will be regarded as a bad risk, and your loan or mortgage will be regarded as an adverse or bad credit loan. You will therefore likely pay a high interest rate, and perhaps also a fairly high arrangement fee. However, if you maintain your payments for two or three years, your credit score will begin to rise.

That is the only real way how to increase your credit score ratings personally. Some professionals will be able to do better for you, but they tend to be expensive. There is an alternative however.
